Early Prevention

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that ALL children see an orthodontist by age 7. Much like your child has “well check-ups” with a pediatrician, an early visit with your orthodontist will ensure that your child is on track to have a healthy and beautiful smile.

We frequently hear, “I thought I was supposed to wait until my child had all of his or her teeth before seeing the orthodontist?”

The reality is that orthodontic problems begin to develop at a very young age and those problems can usually be detected early. Often we meet with parents who are surprised by the problems that we discover in their young, growing children. By becoming educated early and detecting any concerns, you will give your child the best chance to develop a more beautiful and healthy smile.

"A child should see an orthodontist no later than age 7

Braces are generally NOT placed until children have lost most of their baby teeth. But, for some children an early stage of interventional orthodontics is best to avoid more serious problems.

Early treatment (also known as "Phase-One" or "Interventional Orthodontics") begins around the age of 8 or 9. "Phase Two" starts around the age of 10 or older. The good news.... "Phase One" and Phase Two" treatment are typically not necessary. In fact 90% of children can obtain orthodontic treatment in one single phase!

If your child falls within the 10% that will benefit from a two-phase treatment, Ultra Orthodontics gives you credit for Phase-One towards Phase-Two treatment. We realize you work hard for your money and we respect that.

You are probably wondering why the American Orthodontic Association recommends children receive their first orthodontic evaluation at the age of 7 when early treatment is so rarely necessary...

There are several reasons why it is important, it can:

  • Detect and eliminate jaw growth problems that would require surgery later in life
  • Prevent tooth impaction and damage to adjacent teeth
  • Achieve results that are unattainable once growth is complete
  • Give your child a confident smile during growth.
  • Correct harmful oral habits like thumb sucking
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Reduce the need for extensive orthodontic work
